Why gender mainstreaming is important in the ESF

For the European Union, gender equality is a “fundamental right, a common value of the EU, and a necessary condition for the achievement of the EU objectives of growth, employment and social cohesion” (European Commission).

As one of the key tools for promoting gender equality, gender mainstreaming is therefore an essential process in all policy areas, including the European Social Fund.

There are many reasons why gender mainstreaming is important in relation to the European Social Fund. Four of these are set out below:
